Cam tutorial
Welcome
This tutorial gives step by step instructions to design and create a model of cam. No prior experience of using QY CAD or Engineering Reference is required for this tutorial. However an engineering knowledge on the design of cam will be useful.
Tutorial Guide
Each step in the tutorial demonstrates the task to be performed with Graphical User Interface (GUI) of Engineering Reference. Some tasks may require interaction with QY CAD also. This tutorial should take about 15 min to complete.
Introduction
In this tutorial you design and create a model of cam with the following specifications:
-
Pitch Circle Dia : 160 mm
-
Max Lift : 30 mm
-
0 to 110 deg segment with Simple Harmonic rise to a lift from 0 to 15
-
110 deg to 240 deg segment with Double Harmonic rise to a lift from 15 to 30
-
240 deg to 360 deg segment with Simple Harmonic fall from 30 to 0
Follower Roller Dimensions
-
Radius : 10 mm
-
Width : 12 mm
-
Eccentricity : 0
You will perform the following tasks in this tutorial:
-
Start QY CAD and Engineering Reference
-
Enter basic inputs such as Pitch Circle Diameter, Maximum Lift, and Follower Roger Dimensions
-
Set parameters and calculate the output of each segment
-
Create the 3D model
Start QY CAD and Engineering Reference
You must be in QY CAD to access Engineering Reference.
-
Start QY CAD.
-
Click the Application button→New→ISO Assembly.
-
Click the Tools tab→Environs group→Engineering Reference→Cams.
Enter basic inputs
-
Enter the Pitch Circle Diameter, Cam Width.
-
Pitch Circle Dia : 160 mm
-
Cam Plate Width : 12 mm
-
-
Enter the Follower Roller Dimensions:
-
Radius : 10 mm
-
Width : 12 mm
-
Eccentricity : 0
-
-
Leave the other parameters set to the default values.
Set parameters and calculate the output of each segment
-
On the Calculated Results tab, enter the following parameter values for segment 1:
-
Profile = Simple Harmonic
-
Ending Angle = 110
-
Final Lift = 15
-
-
Click Calculate to display the results for the segment. The segment count moves to the next segment.
-
The segment count is set to 2 now. This indicates that the calculation is complete for the first segment and input is required for the segment 2. Input the following parameters for the segment 2:
-
Profile = Double Harmonic
-
Ending Angle = 240
-
Final Lift = 30
-
-
Click Calculate to display the results for the second segment.
-
The segment count is set to 3now. This indicates that the calculation is complete for the first segment and input is required for the segment 3. Input the following parameters for the segment 3:
-
Profile = Simple Harmonic
-
Ending Angle = 360 (This is automatically set)
-
Final Lift = 0 (This is set automatically since the cam has to return to the original position)
-
-
Click on Calculate to display the results for the third segment.
Create the 3D model
-
Click Create to create the 3D model of the cam.
If the current environment is a Part Environment then a new part is created. Use File, Save As command in QY CAD to save the file to a different location. If the current environment is Assembly Environment then an instance of the 3D model is added to the assembly and the assembly is saved.
In this Tutorial you have learned how to use Cams Module to design and create a 3D model of cam for the given inputs.
