Select tool options
You have several options available for controlling element selection in synchronous or ordered documents when using the Select command (Home tab→Select group→Select).
- Select

By default this option is on. When it is off, no components can be selected.
- Selection Priority
-
These options determine how you locate elements. Smart priority sets the locate priority automatically based on the active document.
- Face Priority
-
Turn this option on to locate element types such as faces and features first, then other element types, such as parts and features.
- Part Priority
-
Turn this option on to locates parts first, then other element types, such as individual faces and features.
- Selection Modes
-
These options set the selection mode for adding or removing selected elements. Only the Normal Select Mode is available when no elements are selected. You can set the other modes after you select the first element.
- Normal Select Mode
-
Choose this option to select an element. In this mode, after an element has been selected, it is unselected when another element is selected.
Hold the Shift or Ctrl keys to add more elements to, or remove elements from, the selection set. When you hold the Shift or Ctrl keys and select a second element, the selection mode is automatically changed to the Add/Remove Mode.
Hold the Shift or Ctrl keys to remove already selected elements from the selection set.
To select multiple elements, drag a selection fence around multiple elements.
- Add/Remove Mode

Choose this option to add or remove elements for the current selection set.
- Add Mode

Choose this option to only add elements to the current selection set.
- Remove Mode

Choose this option to only remove elements from the current selection set.
- Selection Manager Mode

Choose this option to open the Selection Manager when an element is selected. See the Selection Manager menu for more information about this menu.
- Clear Selection
-
Choose this option to clear the active selections.
Additional selection features are available depending on the current environment (Home tab→Select group).
Selection Filter
-
Choose this option to specify which elements are included or excluded when making a selection. Setting the selectable features is very useful when using fence selection.
Uncheck All removes all elements from the selection filter to make it easier to include specific elements. Reset restores the selection filter to the default state. Elements that may not be included or are to be excluded in the selection filter are turned off. Indicate specific elements to include in the selection filter by checking or clearing the box adjacent to the element. To close the Selection Filter menu, click Close or click anywhere outside of the Selection Filter menu.
The following element types are available. Depending on the current document type, some options may be disabled.

Assembly Components—Use this option to select components in the graphics window. When turned off, only sketches, planes, and non-component entities are available for selection.

Active Document Only—Use this option when in-place activated in the context of a higher level assembly. Components contained within the current assembly level can be located in the graphic window and components in higher level assemblies are ignored.

Part Priority ignores faces

Overlapping
-
Choose this option to select all elements which are inside or overlapping the selected fence area.
Select Parts by Size
-
Choose this option to open a command bar used to identify elements based on their size. The Part size value is used to specify the initial size of part to include or exclude from the view. The numeric value is based on the size of the parts in the current view where 1 is the smallest part and 100 is the largest.
After selecting an initial Part size value, select either the Smaller and equal to or Larger and equal to option to identify which elements to select. Use the Select Parts by Size arrows to add or remove the next-sized elements to or from the select set. Right-click, Enter, or click the Accept check box to accept the selected set.
The cursor for the Add/Remove Mode is automatically activated to allow individual elements to be added or removed.

Select Visible Parts

Choose this option to selects parts that are fully or partially visible in the active window at its current view orientation. For example, if a part is not hidden, but you are zoomed in so that it is not displayed in the active window, the part will not be selected.
Select Parts Constrained To

Choose this option to only select the elements that are constrained to the selected part.
Select In Identical Subassemblies

Choose this option to select all other occurrences of the currently selected subassembly.
Select All Identical Parts
-
Choose this option to select all other occurrences of the currently selected part.
Activate
-
Choose this option to turn on the Activate command. Selected parts are activated as you clicked them. This command remains active until you select another command or you right-click.
Find Components
-
Choose this command to select components whose properties match the specified criteria.
