modal analysis

The computation of natural frequencies and mode shapes is known as modal, frequency, or normal modes analysis. Use this type of analysis when you want to identify the natural frequencies at which a part or assembly vibrates freely. The objective is to verify that the natural frequencies and mode shapes will not approach the known critical operating frequencies required for your design.

A modal analysis uses the Normal Modes study type and one or more constraints as boundary conditions. It does not use loads.

You can use the results of modal analysis as input to harmonic response analysis to further identify the frequencies at which the design begins to resonate when excited by an external force.
